Visual and UX Design to launch the first commercial product for Ubiety

My Role & Responsibilities

Context & Problem

Without a commercially focused product offering, Ubiety wasn’t able to serve what research indicated was a large market opportunity.

The Work

  • Understand the product needs of commercial customers
  • Design an identity and create the Visual Design for a commercial offering
  • Design an application to meet the needs of commercial customers

Outcome & Results

The SignalWise launch received overwhelmingly positive feedback from beta testers, who praised its usefulness and expressed a willingness to pay for the service, validating its value proposition.

The Problem

Ubiety initially focused on a consumer presence detection product using its proprietary technology. However, commercial security companies recognized its potential and asked Ubiety for a tailored solution.

Entering this new market required creating a distinct product identity and visual language alongside the design of the overall solution.

The Work

To meet commercial needs, I needed to identify key use cases and rapidly develop a purpose-built product with the necessary features, a product identity, and a new visual design.

The team went through different levels of research to ensure we were targeting the right areas to improve. I interviewed commercial customers and partners to understand their commercial presence detection needs and where the Signalwise product could best fit into their business.

Visual Identity, Logo, Style, and Components

This project was 0-1 in every sense. No only was there no usable product, there was no logo or visual identity.

I started with visual design explorations to convey a modern authority. I wanted the product to feel modern, grounded, and authoritative while still feeling unique in the commercial security space. The logo is a stylized “SW” influenced by cell phone receptions bars as a nod to the technology space Signalwise serves.

As it goes in startups, we needed to move as quickly as possible. I began creating components to use as part of the visual language exploration.

Simple Flow for the MVP

While working on the visual design, I put together a small MVP flow that focused on the needs I’d identified in the research with commercial security companies.

  • A view to monitor realtime cellular activity and display the Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (TMSI)
  • Understand the carrier traffic volume for a given time
  • Generate a report to capture all relevant RF data and devices around a specific time or event
  • Have a searchable archive of all cellular activity with the ability to filter by time and type of activity
  • Show trends over time for RF data captured

Forensic Reports

The most requested and most valued feature were the Forensic Reports. When there was an emergency or an event on the property the sensor was installed in, a report could be generated to focus on the RF activity and devices captured during the event with a time buffer before and after the event time.

This report would also include any TMSI information for cellular devices. Law enforcement can use TMSI information to aid in their investigations of the event.

The design of this report went through a number of iterations to find the right way to present the data around a specific point in time. What I’m showing here was what launched with the MVP.

Visual Design and Screens

Most of the other pages for the initial launch were fairly simple and I applied the visual style to the original thumbnail flows proposed. This approach got the main feature set out to live commercial users for them to start to use in their own environments while we continued to get feedback and catalog feature requests.

Outcome & Results

The SignalWise launch garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback from beta testers. They highlighted its practical value and ease of use. Many testers expressed a strong willingness to pay for the service, validating its market potential and value proposition. Users praised specific features, like incident reporting, that addressed their needs effectively. This confirmed the product’s readiness and also provided actionable insights for further refinement and feature prioritization.

  • Designed and launched a completely new product to beta users
  • Designed the SignWise identity to introduce presence technology to commercial customers
  • Created the Visual Design Language of the SignWise product

Hindsight & Reflections

I had a lot of fun with this work. I got to work with a number of commercial security businesses and learned a ton about what they needed. It was really satisfying to be able to design and build solutions for them that they truly needed and benefitted from.

Being able to solve customer problems all while standing up a new identity, visual design language, and complete product design let me flex a ton of design muscles all at once and it was a blast to see it come together.
